Back in August and September we held a couple of social events for club members—the afternoon tea at the Hutton Cricket Club and the Quiz at Shenfield Parish Hall—this time the latter was a joint affair with local am-dram group The Hutton Players.
The Afternoon Tea was a busy affair, well attended for a Thursday afternoon, and the talented Nicola Parry provided us with another delicious repast. As planned, we awarded the Janet Cass Memorial Cup to the 2025 winner as voted for by you—the membership. This year, the votes overwhelmingly chose Club Chairman, William Wells as the Cass Cup recipient. One of the longest standing members of the Club, Margaret Corry, presented the award, and shared one of her memories after she had just joined the Club in the early 1970s. She attended a comedy starring a maid played by a polished and professional Janet Cass, in an absolutely memorable performance. And it was Margaret who suggested to the committee that creating this Cup award would be a good memorial for Janet. Bill was delighted to accept the award, which was well deserved in a year which found him direct the very well received ‘The Ladykillers’ which brought in record audiences for the Club’s recent history, as well as the 80th Anniversary of the end of World War Two evening which brought together a number of very talented people to entertain and commemorate this important year in world history. Unfortunately we made a small (£24) loss on the Afternoon Tea overall.
However, the Autumn Quiz, which we held jointly with The Hutton Players, was a big success making £220 for the Marlborough—all of which helps us to keep the Club running. The quiz, was attended by over 50 people, expertly compiled by Bernard Harper and capably hosted by his son James who humorously kept all the teams in line.
