‘Variation on a Theme’ by Terence Rattigan

Drama: 4 women, 4 men

Inspired by La Dame aux Camelias, and set amidst the glamorous and exotic society of the 1950’s French Rivera, Variation on a Theme revolves around the tempestuous love affair between Rose, a beautiful and worldly socialite, and Ron, a young ballet dancer with a keen eye for social advancement.

In an emotionally charged story of desire and disillusionment, Rose is persuaded by Ron’s choreographer and mentor, Sam, to sacrifice her personal happiness for the sake of her young lover’s success and career.  But as Rose’s health deteriorates, and Ron is faced with the loveless reality of their separation, they finally face up to their need to be needed.

Characters:

          Hettie:         female companion to Rose age 40’s to 60’s

          Rose:            female, ballet dancer physique, age 30’s to 40’s

          Fiona:          female, daughter of Rose aged 16

          Mona:          female, older friend of Rose, age 50’s+

          Ron:             male, ballet dancer physique, age 20’s to early 30’s

          Kurt:            male suitor to Rose age 30’s to 50’s

          Adrian:       male - one line only - can be from off stage

          Sam:            male, ballet dancer physique, choreographer age 40’s to 50’s

AUDITIONS to be held at Sue Grandison’s house, 44 Tennyson Road, Hutton, Saturday 17 December at 10.30 a.m.

Rehearsals will start at the end of February 2023, twice a week, Monday and Wednesday evenings.
